KEOLABS Launches EMD Conformance Testing for Contactless Smart Cards

Service paves way for enhanced interoperability and control of card electromagnetic characteristics

25 March 2015 – Today KEOLABS, leading supplier of smart card certification solutions, announced availability of its Electromagnetic Disturbance (EMD) profiling and conformance testing services for contactless smart cards. Suppliers of components or integrated devices can now obtain EMD profiles and conformance certifications through the companies’ Testing Laboratory. KEOLABS’ testing solution is independent of the application implementation, so results are equally pertinent to electronic passports (ICAO), driving licenses (ISO/IEC 18013), transport fare collection (CIPURSE) and payment cards (EMVCo).

Specifically, the service verifies EMD conformance with standards:

  • ISO/IEC 14443-2:2010/Amd.1: 2011
  • ISO/IEC 14443-3:2011/Amd.1: 2011
  • ISO/IEC 10373-6:2011/Amd.2: 2012

EMD verification was amended to international standards in 2012 to enhance contactless card/reader interoperability. While EMD is a normal phenomenon in Proximity Integrated Circuit Cards (PICC), standards restrict EMD characteristics so that readers can distinguish EMD from legitimate card responses. "EMD testing improves interoperability and is becoming decisive in the conformity certification of products," stated Stéphane Jobard, KEOLABS’ Director of Certification Solutions. He added, “Already, the ISO/IEC 18745-2 and CEN/TS 16794-2 standards for electronic identity documents refer to this EMD testing.”

KEOLABS EMD testing service is the result of intensive "cross testing" with leading partners from the contactless industry. The project made it possible to validate the testing environment and verify EMD results across multiple manufacturers, a wide variety of samples and various testing equipment. KEOLABS' Testing Laboratory offers EMD profiling and conformance verification on the testing environment that resulted from this cross testing project.

The Testing Laboratory, based in Salon-de-Provence, is KEOLABS’ service branch. It includes the ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory which offers debug testing sessions and conformance certification for smart cards, card readers and NFC enabled systems. The laboratory provides test services to all stakeholders in the secure component sector covering application-specific standards for identity, fare collection, payment and mobile communications applications.
